Scans and diagnostic tests in the UAE: prices, preparation and comparison guide

A scan is priced per body region and changes with contrast dye, sedation and the report. A heart test is priced per recording. This guide explains what each scan does in plain terms, why published prices differ, what most centres need before they will book you and what to confirm before paying.

Which scan does what

An X-ray is a quick picture of bones and the chest. Ultrasound uses sound waves to look at soft organs, blood flow and pregnancy, with no radiation. A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast. A DEXA scan measures bone density. MRI uses magnets to produce detailed pictures of soft tissue, joints, the brain and the spine, and takes longer. CT combines X-rays into cross-sections and is fast, which suits the chest, abdomen and injuries. PET shows how tissue is working and is mostly used in cancer care, usually combined with CT.

Heart tests are recordings rather than pictures. An ECG records the heart’s electrical rhythm in minutes. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart’s structure and pumping. A stress test records the ECG, and sometimes the echo, while you exercise or under medication that mimics exercise.

How to compare scan prices

The cards above show a starting price within each scan type. That price is normally one body region without contrast. Adding a second region, contrast dye, sedation, a specialist report or a copy of the images changes the total. Open the scan type to compare current offers on the same basis.

Ask whether the price includes the radiologist’s or cardiologist’s report, how the report and images are delivered, and whether a review consultation is extra. Confirm the final amount with the provider before booking.

Doctor’s requests and specialist reports

Most MRI, CT and PET scans, and many ultrasounds, are done on a doctor’s request that names the body region and the clinical question. Some centres accept self-referral for simple studies. Insurance almost always requires a request and often prior approval. Confirm what the centre needs from you before booking.

The scan is performed by a technologist and reported by a radiologist; heart tests are reported by a cardiologist. The report, not the pictures, is what your doctor acts on. Check the published turnaround for the report and whether it is included in the price.

Preparation and safety questions

Preparation depends on the scan. Contrast studies and abdominal scans may need fasting. MRI requires removing metal and screening for implants and pacemakers. CT, X-ray, mammogram, DEXA and PET use radiation, so tell the centre if you are or might be pregnant. Contrast dye can affect the kidneys, so kidney function may be checked first. A stress test needs comfortable clothing and instructions about medicines and caffeine.

Follow the centre’s written instructions. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless a clinician tells you to, and bring previous images and reports so the specialist can compare.

  • Bring the doctor’s request, ID and insurance card if used.
  • Declare pregnancy, implants, pacemakers, kidney problems and allergies.
  • Ask whether fasting or stopping medicines is required.
  • Confirm who reports the scan and when the report is ready.
  • Ask how images and reports are delivered and shared with your doctor.

How Medifinder compares these offers

Medifinder keeps clinically different services on separate comparison pages. We collect prices and inclusions from provider-owned published pages, show details only when the source supports them and avoid assuming that an expensive package is more complete. Starting prices and provider counts are generated from the currently represented offers rather than written into this guide.

Facility licence information is a directory trust signal, not a guarantee of a particular clinical outcome. Prices are indicative and can change. Review the provider’s current page and confirm the final price, inclusions, preparation and result timing before booking.

Frequently asked questions about scans in the UAE

How much does an MRI cost in the UAE?

It depends on the body region, whether contrast is used and whether the report is included. Open the MRI page to see current starting prices from published provider offers, then compare on the same region and contrast basis.

Do I need a referral for a scan?

Usually for MRI, CT and PET, and for insurance cover of any scan. Some centres accept self-referral for X-ray, ultrasound or DEXA. Confirm with the centre before booking.

What is the difference between an MRI and a CT scan?

MRI uses magnets and is best for soft tissue, joints, the brain and the spine; it takes longer and has no radiation. CT uses X-rays and is fast, which suits the chest, abdomen and injuries. Your doctor chooses based on the clinical question.

Is a scan safe in pregnancy?

Ultrasound and, in most cases, MRI without contrast are used in pregnancy. X-ray, CT, mammogram, DEXA and PET use radiation, so tell the centre if you are or might be pregnant and let the specialist decide.

Does the price include the report?

Not always. Some centres price the scan and the specialist report separately, and a review consultation is usually extra. Ask before booking.

Can Medifinder tell me which scan I need?

No. Medifinder compares published provider prices and service details; it does not diagnose or choose studies for individuals. Ask a licensed healthcare professional which scan, if any, is appropriate.

Sources and review basis

This guide uses public radiology and patient-information sources for general guidance on imaging and heart tests. Provider prices and inclusions remain source-specific and should be reconfirmed.
