What x-ray is

An X-ray uses a small dose of ionising radiation to create a two-dimensional image, commonly of the chest, bones or joints. The referral specifies the area and views. It is fast, but different questions may need ultrasound, CT or MRI instead.

Published prices in the UAE

A limited number of UAE providers publish prices on their own websites. Where there are not enough comparable published prices, this page shows no range rather than a misleading one. Ask the provider for a written price setting out what it includes and excludes.

Why prices differ

The body area, side and number of views drive the price. Portable imaging, additional regions and urgent reporting can change it. A headline “X-ray” price without these details is not comparable.

What to compare in each offer

Confirm the exact area, right or left side, number of views, radiologist report, access to images and expected reporting time. Ask whether every view on the referral is covered by the quoted price.

Insurance and coverage

X-rays are commonly covered when medically necessary, ordered by an eligible clinician and performed in-network. Referral, co-pay and prior-approval rules vary, and self-referred imaging may be excluded. Confirm the exact body area with the insurer and centre.

What to expect

You remove metal from the area and are positioned standing, sitting or lying down. The radiographer may take several images while asking you to remain still or hold your breath. The images are then interpreted by a radiologist.

Suitability and limitations

The radiation dose varies by examination and is kept as low as reasonably achievable. Tell staff if you are or may be pregnant. Repeated imaging should be justified, and prior images can prevent unnecessary duplication.

Choosing a provider

Choose a licensed imaging facility that can perform every ordered view, provides a radiologist report and shares images in a usable format. Compare the same body area and view count, not the word “X-ray” alone.
